Debbie Hendricks, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Coach of the Year in 2001, 2002 and 2003, begins her eighth season as the head volleyball coach at Metro State in 2007. The longest tenured coach at Metro State, Hendricks has directed the Roadrunners to seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and has a record of 163-60 (.731) in her seven seasons. The Roadrunners have won three RMAC regular-season titles (2001, 2002, 2003) and four RMAC tournament titles (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006) under her tutelage. During her time at Metro State, Hendricks has coached six all-Americans (Devon Herron, Jessy Roy, Shawna Gilbert, Gabrielle Curtis, Julie Green, Stefanie Allison), two RMAC Players of the Year (Bazana, Herron), an RMAC Setter of the Year (Curtis), two RMAC Freshmen of the Year (Herron, Allison) and 12 all-Region players. Despite starting the season 3-6, the 2006 Roadrunners won the RMAC Tournament championship and advanced to their seventh straight NCAA Tournament, while finishing with a 21-10 record. Stefanie Allison and Julie Green both earned AVCA honorable mention all-America and all-region honors. In 2005, Metro State posted a 22-9 record and advanced to its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament. The Roadrunners advanced to the championship match of the RMAC Tournament. Gabrielle Curtis was named an AVCA honorable mention all-America, while Stefanie Allison and Curtis were named to the AVCA all-Southwest Region team, with Sheena McLaughlin earning honorable mention accolades. Hendricks' 2001 team posted a record of 28-5, while her 2002 and 2003 teams both went 27-6 and advanced to the regional semifinals. Prior to coming to Metro State, Hendricks coached at West Texas A&M from 1993-98 and led the Lady Buffs to the 1997 NCAA Division II national championship with a 37-3 record. Hendricks, who was named to the Lone Star Conference's 75th anniversary all-sports team in April 2007 for her achievements at WTAMU, compiled a 159-47 (.772) record and coached four Lone Star Conference championship teams. The 1997 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year, Hendricks had two 30-plus win seasons in 1997 (37) and 1995 (30), and was named the 1997 and 1998 Lone Star Conference South Division Coach of the Year and the 1998 Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame Coach of the Year. Before her stint at West Texas A&M, Hendricks served as the first volleyball coach at Wayland Baptist and developed the program from the ground up. In 1992, her second year at Wayland Baptist, Hendricks directed Wayland Baptist to a second-place district finish and a national ranking. During her 15 years of collegiate coaching, Hendricks has an overall record of 359-141 (.718). A graduate of Lubbock Christian University, Hendricks served as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech for two years. During her time in Lubbock, the Lady Raiders broke into the top 20 for the first time and finished the 1990 season ranked No. 9 nationally. Hendricks was a two-time academic all-American, academic all-conference and all-district selection while a player at Lubbock Christian from 1985-1988. She played on two nationally-ranked NAIA teams and held school records for season and career assists, as well as season and career service aces. Hendricks, who recently finished her term as the chair of the NCAA volleyball rules committee, is currently the chair of the all-region committee and is a member of the all-America voting committee. She has served as an AVCA Division II Top-25 poll voter for several years, and has also served on the Southwest Advisory Committee. Hendricks, an avid cyclist, enjoys being outdoors and playing with her beagle. She is single and resides in Littleton. |
